Not too long ago I was asked a great question by a beautiful woman. "What was your favorite present you received and favorite present you gave this year?" Feel free to post your answer to that question as a comment to this blog. I'd be interested to check out your response! Personally, my favorite gift this year I have yet to actually see. It's a framed silk-screened poster from my very first solo performance with my backing band from this past Spring at the Beat Kitchen in Chicago. It's especially awesome because another friend had gotten the Spitalfield finale performance poster framed for me for my birthday last Summer. So these two will look great side by side, don't ya think? My favorite gift that I gave this year was a giant "Gale Sayers: 1965 NFL Rookie of the Year" banner, personalized and signed by Gale himself. I met him at Yorktown Mall a few weeks before Christmas in a sports memorabilia store. Too bad the 2008 Chicago Bears couldn't even make the playoffs. I even attended two (freezing cold) games this year! What gives, Bears? I did my part.

I've been writing so much material lately, it's been great. I can't wait to get into the studio so you guys can hear some of the new songs! I played Metro a little over a week ago, and it felt really good. I've always loved that stage, and I think I always will. Check out this YouTube video of my cover of "In The Air Tonight" by Phil Collins live from the Metro:

The holidays were really special this year. With Dan Man (my younger brother) around on his winter break, we've been able to spend some quality time together. It's been pretty fantastic. If we look back at the past two weeks, one thing we can truly say we accomplished is beating both The Lion King (pictured below) & Donkey Kong Country for Super Nintendo. That is pretty big time.

If you had asked me a couple years ago what my thoughts were on eating sushi, you'd probably have not gotten much of a verbal response- but more of an facial expression that says "Um, hey thanks, but no thanks". It's kind of like Van Morrison and David Gray birthed a child artist who was really into Wes Anderson films. Make sense? Probably not. Suggested track: You Are The Best Thing
D'Angelo - Yes, yes- the ripped black singer who was naked in that video from the mid-90's. But more importantly, one of the best "Neo-Soul" artists I've ever heard. When I think of the term "groove", I think of him. Suggested track to get down to: I Found My Smile Again

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season! 2009 is going to be a good one, I know it.

xoxoxo

Mark

MARK ROSEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12058214171153508472noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1991751812185355027.post-61087004912420327312008-10-16T11:37:00.000-07:002008-10-16T12:16:26.292-07:00Let's get Spooked.
Let's talk about Halloween. I, for one, absolutely love this holiday. I've always loved dressing up and acting like someone I'm not (not just on Halloween, either)- but that is only part of it. One of my all time favorite flavors is pumpkin. Pumpkin pie, pumpkin ice cream, roasted pumpkin seeds, pumpkin bars, pumpkin spice latte, pumpkin candles... yes, yes, yes, yes & yes please. Also, talk about the BEST episodes of most TV shows-- the Halloween specials are almost always killer (No pun intended. The first time I actually wrote "...are always sweet."- which was even worse). Boy Meets World, The Simpsons, Home Improvement, Family Matters, The Fresh Prince and hundreds of other sitcoms all re-run some of their finest "spooky" episodes around Halloween.

I'm tossing around a few different ideas as what to dress up as at my concert on Halloween in PA. In fact, the guys and I may be doing some kind of theme. Working out the details. I promise to share photos.

Do you guys have any great costume ideas? Comment me with either what you're being this year, your best costume ever or the best costume you've ever seen!

Figuring out how to dress at cat like a barnyard owl,
Mark

MARK ROSEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12058214171153508472noreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1991751812185355027.post-45800931352092624092008-08-22T23:51:00.000-07:002008-08-23T00:02:48.636-07:00Tastes Good.Things that are sweet as of late:

Sheetz (the Empire will expand)
Mark Rose Trio featuring (Altoona's very own) The Dan-Man
White Sox baseball (1st place!)
NFL Pre-season (Chicago Bears look... interesting)
E-Lo (the woman)
Where The Light Is (live CD/DVD)
Family Order (aka Boyfriends part deux)
That Great Gourmet himself, Merrill Howard Kailin (RIP)
Moose (dog from Baltimore)
Mousse (Chocolate)
Empires (Band)
Iced Chai (S*bucks)

What has been sweet on your plate lately? I know in this modern age of technology this may not seem like a lot-- but was really a cool moment for me. I wanted to say thanks to everyone who has stuck by & supported me in doing what I love over the years. There is some exciting news on the horizon, and I can't wait to share it with all of you.

Speaking of exciting-- I am so stoked for my tour dates in August. I can't wait to show you all what I've been up and to get some bottled up energy out on stage.

"Silent Running" by Mike & the Mechanics just came on my iTunes... man, I love this song. Can you hear me? Can you hear me running? Anyways, in addition to my new music I've been working on, I've also spent a little time with some of my favorite songs. A friend commented to me not so long ago, asking why I always cover 80's songs. For starters, it was a fantastic decade, and not just because of my birth. But they had a point in asking, so I will be posting a new cover for you guys shortly that ISN'T from the 1980's. In fact, it was originally recorded in 1971. Any ideas what it could be? My only clue is that I decided I should cover it over the 4th of July weekend.

After Mike & the Mechanics comes Miles Davis... "Kind of Blue" to be specific. I should probably dim the lights a bit before I keep typing.

Actually, I'll just end this blog post right here. You know what is sweet? Between now and my next blog post I just might be seeing Lionel Richie perform a free outdoor concert on Lake Michigan. That will most likely deserve it's own blog post. Strike that-- it's own blog.

Salt Peanuts,
Salt Peanuts,
MarkMARK ROSEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12058214171153508472noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1991751812185355027.post-1365342741237069142008-06-15T14:39:00.000-07:002008-06-15T14:43:17.836-07:00Aces & EightsThere is no feeling quite like watching part of your world die.MARK ROSEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12058214171153508472noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1991751812185355027.post-59736549971025705152008-05-30T12:30:00.000-07:002008-05-30T14:01:17.128-07:00peaks and valleysIt's not until you truly hit rock bottom that you realize how good feeling average felt. Last year, I attempted to make a "bullet" blended frozen beverage for all of my friends at a backyard BBQ bash. Allow me to explain. You know those popsicles that are red, white and blue-- most commonly from an ice cream truck or the grocery store? They are often called bullets- probably due to their shape and the association of guns with patriotism in the US of A. Back to my drink... I got three blenders. I made frozen pina coladas in two and strawberry daiquiri in one. I also brought blue food dye to add to the second pina colada, to create one white, one blue and one red beverage. Then I used clear plastic cups, and poured in the frozen drinks in layers, as to re-create the "bullet" popsicle appearance.

Long story short, I failed. The drinks pretty much came out purple. In my mind, this drink was going to work out perfectly. The taste, however, was a success. I believe this drink is actually known as a Miami Vice-- pina colada & daiquiri together. Not a bad combination, especially if you're wearing an open Hawaiian shirt.

I need to come up with something sweet to add to tomorrow's BBQ. I also really wish I had been spending my time brusing up on my 4-square skills, as the last time I played was probably last year's BBQ. How am I suppose to dominate? I'll play hard. That's for sure. In it to win it.

Hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend!

Wearing a denim vest,
MarkMARK ROSEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12058214171153508472noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1991751812185355027.post-14507570726979904892008-05-01T09:55:00.000-07:002008-05-01T10:08:08.056-07:00StudioI am in the studio right now... and it feels so right.

I was on mini-tour / vacation last week... and it felt so right.

I will be enjoying Chipotle about two hours from now... and it will feel so right.

In short: I can't complain right now.

I take that back, what is up with the Kars 4 Kids radio advertisements? They've got what they wanted, here I am blogging about it. Any promo is good promo, right? But seriously, I can't handle that song even one more time in my life. Within the very first 1/2 second of that first piano note I've already changed the station, but I still feel like I've lost the battle having heard it at all. Good cause aside, I really hate that song. If something can really be applied to everything, than how good can it really be at anything? An all purpose cleaner, for example, can be used on tile floors, the kitchen table, in the bathroom, on the microwave, on your front door, and so on and so forth. How good of a job could it possibly be doing at all of these things? It's like when you walk into a restaurant and the menu is just a little too eclectic? I remember a place in Eudora, KS (town where Spitalfield recorded "Stop Doing Bad Things") that was a Chinese/Mexican food restaurant. Honestly, the food wasn't too bad-- but you had to have your doubts. You make Chinese and Mexican food? Okay, cool, I'll have some general tao chicken and a beef taco.

I think the only thing in my life I'd really like to be "all purpose" would be my best friends. And even then, I'd probably prefer "all porpoise". Think about that.MARK ROSEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12058214171153508472noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1991751812185355027.post-86365867408976355762008-03-28T15:00:00.000-07:002008-03-28T16:49:13.942-07:00Is Rusty still in the Navy?Getting into rhythm. Setting the bar higher. Giving more than usual. Honestly answering honest questions. Taking advantage of opportunities. Understanding, but not accepting. Appreciating those who appreciate. All things I am looking to expand upon, effective as of now.

As a Chicago Bulls fan, this season can best be described as frustrating. I've made it out to a whole bunch of games this year (thanks to a "perhaps shady" contact), and enjoyed most of my time spent at the United Center. For anyone who has attended a Chicago Bulls game before, you know that half of the fun (more than half for some) is what's going on during time-outs and in between quarters, on the court and on the jumbo-tron. At a recent game, I had the pleasure of seeing this during every game break.

But I really shouldn't complain too much... there was that five minutes during the halftime show where the man-wall disappeared, only to return with one beer for each hand.

One more Bulls note. I woke up the other day, and did a double take when I glanced in the mirror. This really happened without any alteration of my hair.

It's a sign.

I also heard that Benny the Bull makes $200,000 a year. It's not like we'll get another chance to do this.I guess, sometimes, you have to take the highs with the lows, the good with the bad and the fresh with the expired (scratch that last one-- never take the expired). I've got so many things I feel like I am holding back on right now. So many ideas that I want to explore, so many corners I'd like to turn-- even if it's only to see what is there, and then come right back. Well what's holding you back, Mark? I have been burned before by simply following my heart and doing what I think is right. Too many times. I'm learning from my mistakes, at least on some level, and hope to write the next chapter of my life in pencil, rather than ink. I can always type it out once it looks the way I want it to.

I heard a very interesting point of view on the topic of "looking to the future" on the Stephen A. Smith show on ESPN Radio a couple weeks ago which I have been thinking a lot about. The person being interviewed was Steve Harvey, and they were talking about passion and goals. Here is my attempt at summarizing his thoughts on the subject.

A lot of people, when they are younger, are told: Find something you are passionate about and do it. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't do something or be somebody-- that you're not good enough, not tall enough, not smart enough, not pretty enough-- and so on and so forth. Why tell them that? That's not how the real world works. Why not rework the whole concept to something like: Find something you're gifted at and develop it. Too many people are living in a world of disappointment because they thought their passion and hard work alone would eventually lead to success. It might! IF you're talented in that field to begin with. IF you have the means to be successful once you get there. Getting there isn't the hardest part. Not that it's easy-- because it's not. But once you're there-- it gets harder. Why lead kids to believe they can do anything they put their mind to? We should be telling them to find something that they are good at, and to put their minds to that. To develop the gifts they have. To be who they are. To try to be the very best they can be at what they're good at. Not to say that dreaming big or trying new things is wrong, because it's not. This isn't about limiting what you do for enjoyment-- as a hobby or in your free-time. By all means, try to be happy and have fun. Try everything. Don't limit yourself. But when it comes to your future, be smart about it.

Okay, I know that was long winded-- and, again, that was just my understanding of what he was saying. Talk about a great "modern issues" style topic. Before I give my thoughts and response, I am really interested in hearing what you guys think. I have been thinking about this a lot and would really be interested to see some opinions.

On the North side,
MarkMARK ROSEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12058214171153508472noreply@blogger.com20tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1991751812185355027.post-10170588185415170272008-02-18T12:56:00.000-08:002008-02-18T13:56:09.521-08:00Monday, Monday...If you're into singer/songwriter style folk jams at all, I highly recommend seeing the film Once. I have to give thanks and credit to everyone who suggested it to me (you know who you are). It's so simple, but with so much to give. If you want to hear some samples of the featured music, look up Glen Hansard on iTunes. "Falling Slowly" & "If You Want Me" are great places to start.

So...

I wanted to touch on last Thursday's tragedy at NIU. Any time something of this nature happens, I find myself holding those close to me a little closer. Of course, the question everyone would like answered is, "Why?". I think the hardest thing to try and wrap your head around is the idea that there is nothing you can do. Both of my parents graduated from NIU, as did my older sister, and my younger brother is a junior there this year. He was at the library right next to Cole Hall when everything happened. Scary. Right before the farewell tour started, Spitalfield played at Cole Hall on that very stage the shooting took place from. Surreal is really the only word that can really describe the feeling looking back. I guess the scariest part of events like this is posing the question, "How can you stop someone who is prepared and willing to take their own life?". What kind of security measures could you really take to prevent something like this? I think the emphasis should go on what you can do when something like this starts to happen. On a much different scale, it's the same idea of putting locks on your doors and windows. What are they for? To keep out common thieves, bored teens and random robbery attempts. If somone really wants to break into your house, they'll find a way. An average security system alerts that someone has broken in, it doesn't stop them from entering. Do you see my line of thinking?

Remember to let people you care about, appreciate and admire know how much you do. You never know what this world is going to throw at you.

-MarkMARK ROSEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12058214171153508472noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1991751812185355027.post-30267011346545396712008-02-11T22:21:00.000-08:002008-02-11T22:45:04.190-08:00Hope Won't Weigh You DownWord associations. I could see that. I can even agree with it. "Best team of all time"? Not a chance. I, like many others, loved watching the Patriots get knocked off of their collective high horses by the, underdog, Giants. I don't think you can lose the most important game of the season and still be considered for the "best team of all time".

Here's the thing... I am not a Giants fan. I did, however, root for the Giants five weeks in a row. My logic? I am a Chicago Bears fan. They are the only team I truly care about winning. My enemies are who I care about losing. So, by default, the team playing against my enemies is my next favorite team of the moment. The Patriots in Week 17? Dallas? GREEN BAY? The Patriots part deux? I wanted to see all of them lose.

On the topic of Superbowl Sunday... were the commercials lacking this year, or what? I think the competitive spirit has really died out in recent years. A couple chuckles here and there... but seriously, I've had about all the "it's funny because they are CGI animals... dancing!" for my entire lifetime. The "real dog lapping up water from his bowl" may have been the most attention grabbing commercial of the night.

Oh yeah, welcome to my new blog!

I'm keeping myself busy with new music, eating, sleeping & shoveling snow. I've also taken in a number of movies off of cable... for better or worse. I definitely DVR-d "The Princess Bride" and "Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird", both of which I am stoked to watch (hopefully with an awake or semi-awake E-Lo).

Thanks for all of the cover suggestions to everyone who hit me up last week. I've been doing some listening and experimenting. We'll see what lands right side up.

From a spinning office chair,
MarkMARK ROSEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12058214171153508472noreply@blogger.com4
